Direct Support Professionals Week
Event date: 2013-09-08- 2013-09-14 | Location:
September 8-14, 2013 is Direct Support Professionals Week and it matters to you if you are a person with a disability, senior, family member of a person with a disability, caregiver, employer, taxpayer, or community member!
- If you are a family member of someone with a disability who requires attendant services, attendants allow you to raise kids, hold jobs and help support your family.
- If you are a taxpayer, you pay less for cost effective community services, not expensive institutions. Plus, employers have an increased pool of talent to hire from, whether family members or skilled individuals with disabilities.
- If you are a community supporter, attendants help open community activities, church participation, volunteers and just plain neighborly interaction to the full range of people.
250,000+ Texans provide attendant care in their communities to people with disabilities and seniors, allowing these people to live independently. This year, the Texas Legislature has joined the federal government and 21 other states in observing Direct Support Professionals Week to recognize these workers (view the proclamation).
This Thursday, join the organizers of ADAPT of Texas and the Personal Attendant Coalition of Texas (PACT) at a press event to salute the direct support professional workforce. All community attendants are invited to receive a copy of the Legislative Proclamation and enjoy free pizza! Event details here.
Direct Support Professionals deserve our thanks and respect. Let's all let it show and, while we're at it, let's all support a living wage for this important work!
